What right has the North to dictate who will become our president? We were brought together not by peace or agreement but by force - Adebanjo

Leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo said the northern region of the country has no right to dictate who becomes Nigeria’s president.

Speaking on Monday, November 21, at a public lecture on ‘Nationalism and Nation Building in Nigerian History’ held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs on Victoria Island, Lagos, Adebanjo said that the various tribes of Nigeria were not united peacefully. form a country but by force.

He said;

“We said that the South East should come and negotiate with the North because politics is a numbers game. My case is – and I told people this yesterday – Eastern’s case is not to ask a favor; it is their right. Yet every time I hear they should go around because the North has population, what fraudulent population? You can’t sell me this.

“They tell us to work together but unfortunately because they’ve now produced a president to run things they say ‘no one can become president except you come up north and unfortunately some southerners have been brainwashed that ‘they can’t do anything but bow to the North. I do not believe that.

“What right does the North have to dictate who will become our president? We were brought together not by peace, not by agreement, they forced us to unite and we agreed, so continuing to live together in peace must be in pleasant conditions. The Orient has the right not because he is Igbo but because he is in Nigeria. The principle of Afenifere is based on an ideological basis and a principle of fairness, inclusiveness and not sentiment.
