The Qatari crackdown on support for the LGBTQ community saw an American journalist arrested on Monday (21 November).
Journalist Grant Wahl, who runs a football-covering substack and previously wrote for Sports Illustrated, revealed on Twitter that he was barred from entering the stadium for the World Cup game USA- Wales 2022 on Monday because of his shirt.
His shirt had a soccer ball surrounded by a rainbow, considered the pride color of the LGBTQ community.
Wahl tweeted that he was told, “You have to change your shirt. It’s not allowed.”
Later that day, Wahl tweeted an update, saying he was “OK, but it was a pointless ordeal.”
He wrote: “I’m in the media centre, still wearing my shirt. I’ve been detained for almost half an hour. Come on gays.:
Earlier on Monday November 21, FIFA threatened the captains of European teams with automatic yellow cards for wearing a ‘OneLove’ armband, as they had planned to do, leading to England’s Harry Kane stepping back and wearing instead a FIFA-sanctioned armband.
