A Grade 100 student from the Department of Social Work in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Simon Adokwu, collapsed and died while playing football at the school premises in Akoka, State of Lagos, on Sunday November 13th.
The late Simon, who was an aspiring football star, had taken to the field near the University’s Human Resource Development Center to play football shortly after returning from church. He was playing ball with his peers when he suddenly collapsed. He was immediately transported to the medical center where the doctor on duty confirmed his death.
Confirming the incident, the university’s public relations officer, Alagba Ibraheem, said fellow footballers claimed the deceased had mentioned he was ill but insisted he would continue to play at the soccer. She said her parents were alerted after the incident. She added that his body has been deposited at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, where an autopsy and post-mortem evaluation is expected to be carried out on him.
The late Simon ran a delivery business in the Akoka area to support himself while in college.
May his soul rest in peace, Amen.
