Ugandan Ministry of Health confirms Ebola outbreak

Uganda’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization confirmed the outbreak of Ebola in the country on Tuesday (September 20).

The Ministry of Health said there was one confirmed case of Ebola in the central district of Mubende, a 24-year-old man who showed symptoms and later died.

The WHO Africa office said in a statement that it was the relatively rare strain from Sudan, after Ugandan health authorities investigated six suspected deaths in the district this month.

“There are currently eight suspected cases receiving treatment at a health facility,” WHO Africa said, adding that it was assisting Ugandan health authorities in their investigation and deploying staff to the affected area.

Fever, vomiting and severe diarrhea are some of the symptoms of the highly infectious and extremely deadly Ebola virus.

Uganda has experienced several Ebola outbreaks, including one in 2000 that killed hundreds.
