Troops thwart terrorist attack on Borno collection center
On 60 terrorists suspected of being members of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) met their waterloo after trying to infiltrate the military base serving as a staging center for the gubernatorial and presidential elections last weekend’s State Assembly in Borno State.
Vanguard reported that the terrorists invaded the town of Mafa hours after Governor Babagana Zulum cast his vote at polling unit 001 in the Ajari Ward of Mafa Local Government in Borno State.
They stormed the town in armed trucks and motorbikes around 2 a.m. and were heading towards the military base where vote collection for the local government was underway.
However, Operation Hadin Kai troops wiped out the terrorists, following an aggressive counter-attack operation supported by air task force fighter jets dispatched to the scene.
Fighter jets bombarded the fleeing terrorists, killing many while a few who managed to flee came away with fatal injuries.
Sources told the publication that the bodies of 60 of the terrorists had been found, the bodies riddled with bullet holes.
A Hilux vehicle, several weapons and ammunition were also reportedly recovered from the fleeing terrorists.
