Officers from the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), popularly known as VIO, were injured to varying degrees in an accident at the Lugbe Bridge along the airport road international Nnamdi Azikiwe in Abuja.
The crash which happened around 3.10pm on Monday September 19 was caused by VIO officers driving on ‘One Way’ while pursuing a vehicle at the Lugbe interchange.
Officers were found to be driving against the current across the bridge in an attempt to arrest a driver whose vehicle documents are believed to have expired but who, in the process, had a head-on collision with an oncoming Toyota Corolla vehicle reverse with registration number ABJ 717. CE.
The injured VIO officers were taken to hospital. Both vehicles involved were damaged beyond recognition.
The incident which drew a large number of bystanders and well-wishers who thronged the scene blamed the accident on officers.
The driver of the vehicle (Abraham) who escaped death by a mustache while recounting his experience said he was getting on the bridge when he suddenly saw the VIO vehicle coming from the opposite direction at high speed.
He said it was God who kept him alive given the impact of the accident.
