“They are inconsistent” – Yiaga Africa denounces the results of the presidential elections in Imo and Rivers

Yiaga Africa, one of the civil society organizations that worked with the Independent National Electoral Commission in the 2023 elections, criticized the presidential results emanating from Imo and Rivers state.

In a press release published on Wednesday March 1, the organization which deployed observers in the states of the country, sand the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were manipulated.

The statement read;

“The state-level presidential results for Imo and Rivers are inconsistent with Yiaga Africa WTV’s projections for both states.

“For Rivers, the INEC announced 231,591 votes for APC, or 44.2%; 175,071 for LP or 33.4%; and 88,468 for the PDP or 16.9%.

“This contrasts sharply with Yiaga Africa WTV’s estimates for Rivers which are: APC 21.7% ± 5.0%; for LP 50.8% ±10.6%; and PDP 22.2% ± 6.5%.

“For Imo, INEC announced 66,406 for APC or 14.2%; 360,495 for LP or 77.1%; and 30,234; for PDP or 6.5 percent.

“Again, this is at odds with Yiaga Africa WTV’s estimates for Imo which are: APC 5.1 ± 2.3%; LP 88.1% ±3.8%; and PDP 5.7% ± 2 .3%.

“Based on the returns of 97% (1,453 out of 1,507) of sampled voting units, Yiaga Africa’s statistical analysis shows that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to receive between 34.4% and 37.4 % of the vote, the Labor Party (LP) is expected to receive between 24.2% and 28.4% of the vote, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is expected to receive between 4.6% and 6.4% of the vote, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is expected to win between 28.3% and 31.1% of the vote, while no other political party is expected to receive more than 0.3% of the vote.

Yiaga Africa who asked INEC to cclarifying inconsistencies in some of the results, particularly from Rivers and Imo states, also called for extending voting hours to 5 p.m. in subsequent elections as well as maintaining polling station results uploads of the EC 8A form on its IReV portal.
