Rejection of Nigeria?s food items abroad is worrisome ? FG

The Federal Government has expressed concern over the rejection of Nigerian food products and other goods being exported out of the country.

Speaking at the opening of a six-day training for members of the National Codex Committee on Food Safety Risk Analysis and the Revised CNC Procedures Manual organized in partnership with the Organization Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Health Minister Dr Osagie Ehanire said the rejection is affecting the country economically.

The Minister who was represented at the event by the Director and National Coordinator of the Food Safety and Quality Programme, Mr Atanda John, said the committee he heads was set up “to ensure the protection of food, ensure you take good and safe food and also to ensure fair practices in the international food trade.

Ehanire said;

“We heard about the rejection of our food; it is because we do not respect this standard, and that does not give a good image to the country. It affects us economically in terms of tourism and in all other aspects.”

He urged stakeholders to focus on the quality of the items they export to reduce the prevalence of Nigerian food products overseas.
