Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Minister Sadiya Farouq has denied adding 206 billion naira to her ministry’s budget.
Appearing before the Senate Special Duties Committee on Monday, Nov. 21 to defend the 2023 budget, Farouq said the ministry requested certain projects for the Northeast Development Commission and the National Social Safety Net Project in the 2022 budget. , which has not been released, but was surprised to see an inflated amount in the ministry’s 2023 budget.
Asked about the bloated N206bn in the budget, she said;
“Yes, we mentioned the plans for 2022 that weren’t released, and some of it was for the NEDC.
“The money hasn’t been released, and now that we’ve seen it happen almost 10 times over, we’ll also seek clarification from the Department of Finance as to why the increase has happened despite the fact that the previous year the requested money was not released for the projects so we will get the details and then send them to you.
Expressing shock at this, Senator Elisha Abbo said;
“This is serious. We cannot continue to borrow money and put this country in debt so that our children come to pay without investing in what they will see.
The chairman of the committee, Senator Yusuf Yusuf, has moved a motion to summon the Minister of Finance to explain the 206 billion naira inserted in the budget.
