The Ebonyi monarch’s killers are looking for his children
The armed men who kill the traditional leader of the Umuezekoha community in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Ezeogo Igboke Ewa State allegedly targeted his children.
The monarch, who was the chairman of the Ezza North Traditional Rulers Council in the state, was shot dead by gunmen suspected of being political thugs on Monday night.
State Governor David Umahi, who confirmed the development at a press conference at New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki, said the deceased son informed him of the incident while speaking from his hiding place.
“The son called me from where he was hiding and told me that armed men had killed his father and were also looking for his children. I had to immediately send police, military and men from the Department of State Services to take over their compound and rescue them,” the governor said.
“I tried to ask about him and he said that his father supported the candidate of a particular party and that his decision was not well received by another party and that it is suspected that he could be behind his murder.I directed the police commissioner to fish out the perpetrators and their sponsors.
The governor claimed the monarch’s murder could be politically motivated, stressing that no life was worth wasting on political office.
“He is a man who is over 80 years old; a very respected man beyond the shores of this state and just for political reasons the man was shot. It is so disturbing and it is important that the security officers do the needful and stop further killings in the state,” he added.
Umahi described the slain royal father as an honest and pleasant man who had contributed to the development and unity of the state.
State Police spokesman SP Onome Onovwakpayeya told News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki on Tuesday that the command was aware of the incident.
“Yes, we are aware of the murder and an investigation has begun to find the perpetrators of such a heinous crime,” she said.
