Jesse Armstrong, the creator of the HBO series “Successor,” dissed King Charles III in his acceptance speech for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2022 Emmys.

The Emmys took place on Monday evening, September 12, just days after King Charles III ascended to the throne.

Jesse Armstrong, 51, who is British, took aim at the king while delivering a speech.

He told a star-studded audience at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles: “Big week for estates. New king in the UK…for us.”

“Um, obviously a few more votes involved in our victory than Prince Charles,” he continued, acknowledging the Television Academy votes that earned his team a gold statuette.

His statement drew gasps and cheers from the audience.

He then added: “I’m not saying we’re more legitimate in our position than him. We’ll leave that to other people.”

He then moved on from the royal speech and applauded those involved in the success of his HBO series.

“We are incredibly grateful to have this honor,” Armstrong said. “This group is extraordinary. It’s a team effort.”

Viewers took to Twitter to comment on Armstrong’s speech, with some supporting him and others criticizing him.

“Why is dude accepting the price of succession looking for enemies in the royal family omgndjsksmddjj,” one person wrote.
