A team of police and soldiers rescued 76 passengers abducted by bandits along Funtua-Zaria road in Gulbala area of ​​Giwa local government area in Kaduna state.

State Police Command Spokesman, DSP Mohammed Jalige, who disclosed in a statement on Monday, November 21, 2022, said the victims were passengers from Sabon Birni LGA in Sokoto State.

According to the PPRO, the victims were rescued on Friday, November 18, when the police division headquarters, Giwa, received a report that a large number of bandits armed with sophisticated weapons were blocking the stretch of the road to abduct innocent commuters.

The police and army were immediately mobilized to the scene to dismantle the roadblock, root out the armed miscreants and rescue any casualties they might have kidnapped.

He said that upon arriving at the scene, an open Ford truck with Reg. The APP number 667 XG was found and the information gathered indicated that a large number of passengers in the truck had been moved off the road by the bandits.

“On November 18, at around 11:00 p.m., Giwa Divisional Police Headquarters received reports that a large number of bandits blocked a section of the Funtua-Zaria road in the Gulbala area of ​​Giwa LGA and abducted many commuters,” the police spokesman said.

“Based on the report, a combined team of police and military was immediately mobilized to the scene with clear directives to dismantle the roadblock, root out the armed miscreants and rescue any victims they might have abducted.

“Upon arriving at the scene, an open Ford truck with Reg. APP number 667 XG, was found and information gathered indicated that a large number of passengers in the truck had been moved off the road by the bandits.

“This development engendered an immediate search and rescue operation by the officers in the adjourned forest.

“The thorough combing of the forest for several hours by the crack agents succeeded in saving a large number of victims totaling seventy-six (76) comprising men and women of different ages.”

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims who were passengers of the truck were traveling from Sabon Birni LGA of Sokoto State en route to different destinations when they were intercepted by the marauders,” he added.

Jalige also said security guards were still operating in the general area looking for the main truck driver and two other passengers who have not yet been found.
