Presidency 2023: The presidency is not a regional issue. Igbos should wait for next time

Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu said Igbos should sit out the 2023 presidential election and wait for another election cycle.

Speaking to reporters at the National Assembly compound in Abuja on Tuesday, September 20, Kalu said the presidency is not a regional issue and can only be won with support from other geopolitical areas.

“The presidency is not a regional issue. I asked the political parties to zone the presidency to the Southeast. When they didn’t, and since the presidency is not a regional issue, I had to withdraw.

“I have no problem with an Igbo man being president. But we have to do it with other Nigerians. If we don’t do it with other Nigerians, it won’t work no matter how popular you are. He is the president of Nigeria, not the president of Igboland.

“I am an Igbo man to the core. I am also a Nigerian at heart. If someone from the Southeast had been nominated for the presidency, I would have been the one. So it’s a party business. I have no grudge against anyone who is running.

“So it’s not personal. It’s political and partisan. It’s about winning elections for a party. I chose to be at APC. Why am I going to vote against Tinubu? It’s madness, and I’m not going to. Elections run along the party line, not the tribal line.

“For me, we will wait another time and see how all Nigerians will agree to zone the presidency to Igboland. But for now, our presidential candidate is Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Tinubu is a strategic leader, he will make his presidency beneficial to the Igbo. The Igbo will be the biggest beneficiaries of Tinubu’s presidency.
