Police rescue 17-year-old girl allegedly starved, brutalised and locked up by her aunt in Plateau

The Plateau State Police Command rescued a malnourished 17-year-old girl, who was believed to have been locked in a goat pen by her aunt, for over a week in Rikkos, Government Area local Jos North of the State.

A neighbor alerted the National Human Rights Commission in Jos, after which the police were called in, leading to his rescue.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) discovered that the aunt liked to abuse and starve the girl, an orphan.

The coordinator of the Plateau National Human Rights Commission, Ms. Grace Pam, confirmed the rescue of the girl in a press release on Friday, November 18, 2022.

“The commission received information from an anonymous complainant that the girl was locked on the balcony of a house by her aunt,” she said.

“She lived with her grandmother before coming to the aunt’s because the grandmother was sick and could no longer take care of her.

“The complainant alleged that the aunt traveled for almost a week and left the girl without food.

“The investigation revealed that the girl was really malnourished and had scars on her hands, neck and other parts of her body.

“The marks were a result of the incessant beatings she was receiving from her aunt. The matter was reported to the police where the aunt’s statement was taken on her return from her trip.

“The young girl was temporarily housed until she recovered. We also discovered that the orphan had never been allowed out, but was locked in the house and not fed. She was taken to the hospital by one of our partners to ensure proper medical care,” she added.

Pam lamented the increase in cases of child abuse in recent days, pointing out that “as we speak, there is the case of another victim, a nine-year-old girl, who came to live with his aunt barely two months ago.

“We had to save her on Thursday from her aunt; she beat her mercilessly, but thank God she didn’t blind her, but injured her eye. We took her to the hospital on Friday with scars from severe beatings.”,

“When our staff went there, she was locked up in a zinc house where the aunt keeps her goats. The girl can’t wait to get back to her parents,” she said.

The coordinator called on citizens to put an end to rights violations.
