Police arrest Chesterfield footballer after Oldham player Hallam Hope was left with ‘serious injuries’
Hallam Hope has been hospitalized after being the victim of a “brutal assault”.
Police have arrested a footballer after an Oldham player was allegedly assaulted by a Chesterfield opponent in a car park following a game between the two teams.
Hallam Hope, an Oldham striker, was left with what his club described as ‘serious injuries’ following a ‘brutal assault’ after the two teams met at Boundary Park at the start of the month.
The former Everton trainee had to be hospitalized and hasn’t played since the September 4 incident.
National League Oldham reportedly provided police with CCTV footage of the alleged attack, while Chesterfield said he was helping the force with their investigations.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said the suspect had been arrested and later released pending further investigation.
It read: “A man was arrested on September 9 on suspicion of assault following a report of an assault by a man in his 20s, at Boundary Park, Oldham on September 4, 2022. The suspect has since was released under investigation.”
Chesterfield, seeking promotion, had won the match 2-0. Oldham said Hope was then attacked in the staff parking lot, suffered serious injuries and would be “out of action for a few weeks”.
A statement from Chesterfield, released at the time, read: “We are aware of an allegation regarding an anonymous Chesterfield player. We assist Greater Manchester Police in their investigations. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this stage.
