Residents told the publication that the terrorists, who were attending the christening ceremony of a child at Mr Turji’s home, were caught off guard by the aerial bombardment.

An Air Force source at nearby Katsina Forward Operating Base, who asked not to be named as he was not authorized to speak to the media, also confirmed the raid.

The senior officer said the famous kingpin’s whereabouts were still unknown as of Sunday morning.

A former community councilor from Fakai, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the terrorists were inside an unfinished mosque when the soldiers struck.

“I left the community for personal business at Shinkafi around 1:58 p.m. but did not reach my destination when I started receiving calls that the community was under attack. My family thought it was bandits who were attacking, but they called to say it was the air force, I could hear the roar of jet planes,” the politician told PREMIUM TIMES in a phone interview.

He said those killed were militiamen (men and women) who were inside the mosque, adding that Turji was not in town during the attack.

“If he (Mr. Turji) is in the city, everyone knows because you will see his fighters with sophisticated weapons protecting his house. The nomination took place in the morning when the normal women’s event had not yet started in the evening,” he said.

Another resident who also asked not to be named said he had evacuated his family members to the local government headquarters, Shinkafi.

“It was very deadly. I saw the bandits running as we tried to hide outside the community. Everyone was confused, but thank God the jets didn’t stay long, that would have affected some of us innocent locals,” he said.

He added that on Saturday night no civilian casualties had been recorded, insisting that “only his own (Mr Turji’s) had been killed”.

The source said that so far 12 of Mr. Turji’s fighters and some women have been killed in the raid.

A senior official at the Air Force Forward Operating Base in Katsina confirmed the offensive to the publication.

“Not only his camp (that of Mr. Turji). We have been launching attacks since last Wednesday,” the air force official said.

The official said the Air Force “had been monitoring the community since Friday. And when we had clear information, we moved in but unfortunately he was not caught in the buildings we raided.

He said the raid was carried out by the officers of “Operation Forest Sanity” and the air components of “Operation Hadarin Daji” using Mi 17s and an Alpha jet while another aircraft provided surveillance throughout the offensive.

When asked how they knew Mr Turji was not one of those killed, the officer simply replied “the jets have footage of the scene during the attack and we know who was affected”.
