A Nigerian national and his accomplice have been arrested in India for allegedly deceiving people after befriending them on social media.
The suspects, Akne Benjamin (32) and Fatima Lyngdoh (42), a resident of Khasi Hill district in Meghalaya, were arrested in Delhi by Rajasthan police on Monday, September 19, 2022.
Superintendent of Police, Sirohi Mamta Gupta said in a statement that a complaint was received at Abu Road Sadar police station on April 24 in which a woman alleged that she had become friends on Facebook with a woman who had told him she was from New Zealand. .
During questioning, Lyngdoh confessed to deceiving people in different states out of several million rupees, police said.
The senior police officer said the two defendants used to create fake profiles of foreign nationals on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, among others.
After befriending their targets, the accused told them that they had sent expensive gifts.
Afterwards, another member demanded the victim pay a fee, failing which the target was threatened that investigative agencies would open an investigation into the gift, police added.
