Youth and education

Manuel Akanj was born on July 19, 1995 in Neftenbach, a Swiss municipality, from his mother, Isabelle AkanjiSwiss national and former tennis player, and father, Abimbola Akanji, a Nigerian and financial expert who once played amateur football. He is the second child and the first boy in the family, and the names of his sisters are Michelle and Sarah.

Career

At 9 years old, Manuel Akanji, a young player, is registered with FC Wiesendangen, an amateur sports team in his neighborhood. You might not have known that the youngster started as both a winger and a central midfielder. Everyone at the time recognized him as a mature young man who had started winning honors at a very young age.

At the age of 11, FC Winterthur was attracted to him due to his success with his first academy. This is a larger academy that competed in the second division of Swiss football. There, Manuel Akanji persisted in rising through the youth ranks, a feat that saw him graduate with the academy’s football team. Not to mention, the teenager didn’t start playing defensive center until he was around 17 years old.

After leaving the academy, the Swiss footballer quickly joined Winterthur first team via perseverance. Above all, Manuel Akanji’s family experienced unimaginable emotion when he was selected for the Swiss U-20 team. He immediately realized he was headed for superstardom at that point.

His rapid development with the national team caught the attention of FC Basel the best club in Switzerland, and he was bought in 2015. While still with the team, the Super Central Back helped their Super League and Swiss Cup wins. After accomplishing this feat, scouts from major European clubs sought his services.

After Sokratis Papastathopoulos left for Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund started looking for a replacement for the Greek player. Fortunately, Manuel Akanji was chosen by BVB. After a strong start at Dortmund, he was called up for the 2018 World Cup, where he, along with Haris to Sefer, Xhaka Granite, Xherdan Shaqiriand others, helped Switzerland qualify for the knockout stages.
