Man jailed three years for cultism in Lagos

A 23-year-old man, Ganiyu Ismaila was sentenced to three years in prison for illegal membership of the Aiye Brotherhood in the state.

Appearing before Magistrate, S. O Obasa, of Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, the Prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure told the court that Ismaila committed the offense on January 4, 2019 in Imota area of ​​Ikorodu, Lagos, and was arrested on March 3, 2022.

Oriabure noted that the offense is contrary and punishable under Section 42(b) Cap CH, C17, Vol.3 Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The convict later pleaded guilty to the offense and said his friend tricked him into joining the cult group by inviting him to one of their meetings.

Ismaila said they held their meetings every first Sunday of the month at St John’s Primary School, Imota, and it was there that he was initiated.

The prosecutor told the court that Ismaila was arrested by the Anti-Cult Unit of the Lagos State Police Command.

The accused was convicted after pleading guilty to one count of membership in the cult group.
