‘It’s unconstitutional’ – Baba-Ahmed, Peter Obi’s running mate, asks President Buhari and CJN not to organize Tinubu’s inauguration (video)

The Labor Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has asked President Buhari and Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Olukayode Arowoola, not to organize the inauguration of President-elect, Bola Tinubu, the next May 29. as his emergence as an elected president is not in line with the Nigerian constitution.

Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on March 1.

Speaking on Channels TV tonight, Baba-Ahmed argued that the APC had failed to meet the requirements of Article 134(2)(a) and (b) of the constitution for election to the post of president. According to the provisions of this article, the legitimate winner is the one who “has the greatest number of votes cast at the election” and “has at least one quarter of the votes cast at the election each of at least two-thirds of the all the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja”.

However, in the opinion of the LP vice-presidential candidate, going ahead with the nomination of Tinubu is unconstitutional.

“Mr. President, do not hold this inauguration. CJN, Your Lordship, do not participate in unconstitutionality,” he said.

According to him, swearing in a ticket that did not “meet the requirements of the constitution is to put an end to democracy”.

“That is my interpretation and it is indeed a correct interpretation,” Baba-Ahmed added. You can’t swear [in] people who have failed to meet constitutional requirements; You can not do this. If you do, you have done something illegal, unconstitutional. I don’t take risks with my safety and with my life. It was more extreme for [INEC Chairman, Mahmood] Yakubu to issue this certificate; it was reckless. It puts all our lives in danger. he said
