Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspects in the murder of a 30-year-old businessman, Dominic Uguru and his friend Jagbo.
The incident happened on the night of Wednesday, November 16, 2022, along the NDDC road in the Sapele region of the state.
Uguru, an electronics dealer, was at home with Jagbo when the four suspects, Bright Osifo, (23), Goodness Obade, (30), Obunwa Kasim, (25) and Ogadinma Francis (27), burst into his house around 11 p.m. and demanded the sum of one million naira.
It was understood that Uguru could only transfer thirty-six thousand naira, from where they killed him and his friend.
Command spokesman DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the arrest in a Sunday November 20 statement, said the prime suspect, Ogadinma Francis, confessed to conspiring with the other suspects and killing Uguru for refusing to pay him for work done. .
“Following the report received by the DPO Sapele Division from a distress caller (name omitted), that on 16/11/2022 at approximately 09:00, he discovered that his owner named Uguru Dominic ‘m’ was 29 years old and that his male friend’s name and address were not known were found dead in the bathroom, suspected of having been murdered by unknown persons, and that the suspect took the victim’s Toyota Corolla car with him ABJ registration number 271 in white color,” the statement read.
“The DPO assigned detectives to unravel the mystery behind the deaths. As a result, the team sprung into action, embarked on an intelligence-led investigation which led to the arrest of a certain Ogadinma Francis AKA “Gentle”, 27 years old and the deceased’s vehicle recovered from him”,
“The suspect confessed to doing filler work for the deceased and after working for him refused to pay him the agreed amount. The suspect also stated that he conspired with his friends to commit the crime.
“Acting on his confession, the three accomplices, namely Goodnews Abaje ‘m’ aged 30, Obunwa Kasim ‘m’ aged 25 and Bright Osifo ‘m’ aged 23 were arrested.
“They said the original plan was to rob the victim, they tied him up until about 4:30 a.m. and then forced him to transfer the sum of thirty-six thousand naira (#36,000) to the account of one of the suspects.
“They further stated that they decided to kill them both because they believed the victims recognized them and they would report them to the police.
“Delta State Police Commissioner, CP Ari Muhammed Ali FCIA, PSC+ has ordered that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation,”
Meanwhile, a source who claims to be Dominic’s friend and begged not to be mentioned told Vanguard that his late friend had just returned the day before from Lagos where he had gone to stock his store when the assailants struck.
He lamented that maybe if Dominic hadn’t gone to stock his shop, he would have given the attackers the million naira and probably saved his and his friend’s life.
“Dominic and Ogadinma are from the same community in Ebonyi State and it was Ogadinma who invited the others to town to attack Dominic and his friend that night, and when he could only transfer thirty- six thousand naira instead of the million naira they demanded from him, they killed him and his friend and dragged their bodies to the bathroom,” the source said.
