Elections 2023: Rukayat Shittu, a 26-year-old woman, wins the Kwara House of Assembly seat

Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, 26, of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner of the Owode Onire State constituency of Asa Local Government Area in the election in the Kwara State Assembly. Ms Shittu polled 7,521 people to beat her People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rival, which won 6,957 points in Saturday’s election. This makes her one of the youngest female candidates in Nigeria to run and win a political seat. Shittu is a journalist and former President of the Senate of the NOM Students Congress (CONS) at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). She attended LGEA Baptist Primary School, Ilorin and Government Girls Day Secondary School, Oko Erin where she obtained her Higher Secondary School Certificate in 2011. She proceeded to Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies affiliated with Bayero Kano University where she graduated with a degree in Mass Communication and Islamic Studies in 2015. After graduation, she enrolled in a fashion school. . In 2017, she was admitted to the National Open University of Nigeria and graduated in 2022. In an interview with Premium Times, after winning the nomination as an APC candidate, Shittu said her parents were fully supportive his political career. I have the best parents you can pray for on earth. They are the backbone of my political aspirations and it’s been that way since I was a student. My dad would usually advise me to contest positions at school and I mostly got contest funds from him. Their disposition regarding my political aspirations is so firm, she says. My father studied me and knows what is best for me so he doesn’t hesitate when I aspire to things.
