A high court in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, November 21, 2022 sentenced two people, Deji Owolabi (30 years old) and Opeyemi Oluwakomolafe (22 years old) to death by hanging for armed robbery.
The court also sentenced them to seven years in prison each for conspiracy and for escaping from lawful detention at Ado-Ekiti prison.
The prosecution had previously told the court that the duo escaped during an escape from Ado-Ekiti prison on December 1, 2014.
They robbed a couple on July 14, 2015 in Ilumoba Ekiti where they raped the 35-year-old woman.
The prosecutor, Mr. Ilesanmi Adelusi, called five witnesses and presented a Dane pistol, 10 telephone handsets, a machete and other exhibits recovered from the convicts.
The convicts rejected five different lawyers arranged for them and opted to defend themselves. They also called two witnesses.
Delivering her judgment, Presiding Judge Monisola Abodunde said, “In my view, the defendants are compulsive pathological liars who have become hardened criminals.
“Rather than make amends in prison, they escaped from prison in an escape and continued to strike terror into the community until Nemesis caught up with them.
“They are a threat to a peaceful existence in our society and they must be made to face the reality of the consequences of their evil behavior.
“I find the two defendants guilty of the charges against them and they are sentenced to death by hanging. May the Lord have mercy on your souls.”
