Former US President Donald Trump announced his third candidacy for the White House on Tuesday evening, November 15, becoming the first Republican to participate in the 2024 presidential race.

Trump dismissed criticism of the deadly Jan. 6 riot on the U.S. Capitol and the Republican Party’s recent anger over GOP struggles in the midterm elections.

Trump, 76, declared his candidacy in Palm Beach, Fla., nearly two years after the November 2024 national election and after publicly flirting with a pre-midterm entry over the summer.

Official documents forming the “Donald J. Trump for President 2024” campaign committee were filed with the Federal Election Commission just before his speech.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States tonight,” Trump said in a packed ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago estate. “Together we will confront the most corrupt forces and entrenched interests imaginable.”

In his speech, the twice-impeached former president described America’s streets “soaked in blood” and said the county was “being destroyed.”

Trump has baselessly claimed that China played an active role in deciding his 2020 race with President Biden. TV stations cut the speech after Trump declared his candidacy.

“Our country is in a horrible state – we have serious problems,” Trump said. “That is not the job of a conventional politician or candidate. This is the task of a great movement.

During the speech, Biden responded with a tweet that read “Donald Trump has failed America.” The post included a video highlighting Trump’s pivotal role in erasing federal abortion rights and inspiring the crowd that ripped through the Capitol.

The timing of its 2024 announcement is exceptionally early. Most White House candidates launch their campaigns less than a year before the election.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is seen as the best-placed Republican to take on Trump, while Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence is another possible candidate.

Trump won nearly 140 million votes in two general presidential elections and remains a formidable force in American politics despite the loss of his social media accounts and several investigations by Democrats.
