Desmond Elliot reacts to his political opponent Olumide Oworu’s attack by thugs
Desmond Elliot, the member of the National Assembly from Lagos who is seeking re-election for a third term, has condemned the attack on the campaign team of his opponent, Olumide Oworu.
Olumide is the Labor Party’s candidate for the Lagos State Legislative Assembly in Surulere Constituency.
On On Thursday, March 16, Olumide tweeted that thugs invaded his campaign rally held on Tuesday, March 14 in Iponri, Surulere.
He wrote: “My team and I were attacked on Tuesday while trying to campaign in Iponri, Surulere. A member of my team was injured, but we are grateful that the incident did not escalate beyond the level it was at. The case was reported to Iponri police station.
“I am not discouraged by the incident. Instead, I am more determined to go through with it. We will be going through Ward 1 neighborhoods (Akinhanmi/Cole, Adeniran/Ogunsanya, Iponri Housing Estate/Eric Moore , Igbaja/Stadium, Shitta/Ogunlana Drive, Yaba/Ojuelegba) See you outside!
State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed Tuesday’s attack, saying, “I can confirm it but I don’t have all the details yet.”
In a statement shared via his verified Facebook page, the All Progressives Congress candidate and incumbent representative for Surulere Constituency called Oworu’s attackers “overzealous political jobbers posing as party supporters”.
Hours after actress Kemi Lala Akindoju called on Desmond to publicly condemn the attacks or else his silence will mean he endorses the attack on Olumide Oworu, Elliot released a statement via his Facebook account.
It reads: ‘The attention of the media office of the Hon. Olushola Desmond Elliott was drawn to the senseless attack on Labor Party supporters in Surulere by suspected thugs and overzealous political wholesalers posing as party supporters.
“The Honorable Elliot has reiterated in several forums in the run-up to the general elections that he will never participate in any initiative to undermine the peaceful co-existence we currently enjoy in Lagos State as citizens under the wise leadership of His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“He strongly condemns violence in any form and as a law abiding citizen, he has called on everyone to let reason prevail and control their emotions for the benefit of all Lagosians.
“Mr. Elliot is peaceful and law-abiding and has urged his many supporters to also remain law-abiding while urging them to turn out in large numbers to vote for all of the All Progressive Congressional, APC candidates on Saturday.”
Desmond’s Facebook post was not well received and many of his followers took to the comments section to call him out.
