Court discharges and acquits man who was arrested and arraigned over a phone that went missing while helping the owner charge it

A Nigerian man simply identified as Sunday has been released and acquitted in a Lagos state court after being arrested and charged over the loss of a phone he was helping the owner charge.

A non-governmental organisation, Headfort Foundation, which helped secure his freedom, said on Sunday he was visiting the University of Lagos where a friend of his is a student. The foundation said Sunday was charging his phone when a certain young man approached him and asked him to use his charger as well because it had two slots. It turned out that during the charge Sunday went out to use the restroom and in doing so the man’s phone was stolen. He was charged with theft, arrested and then brought to trial. He was released on bail but was unable to fulfill his bail condition. After months in detention, his case was dismissed and acquitted by the court as the witness later informed the court that the phone in question was found later.
