Court jails father for raping 14-year-old daughter in Akwa Ibom
An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo jailed a 45-year-old civil servant, Uduakabasi Oku Edet, for raping his 14-year-old daughter.
the oath, a native of Ikot Ekpene village in the Ibiono Ibom local government area of the state, was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.
The convict repeatedly assaulted and raped his daughter on five occasions between July 2018 and October 2019 at his residence in Uyo.
It was learned that on one such occasion, the convict had anal intercourse with the victim, which caused him difficulty in defecating, and also inserted his finger into his daughter’s private parts when she came back from school for the holidays.
The convict was also accused of whipping and stabbing the victim in the head with a knife for taking food from the kitchen to eat without her stepmother’s permission.
The victim told the court that after her father raped her, she started feeling pain in her private parts, her breasts swelled up and she started noticing brown and black secretions coming out of her private parts.
Respite was granted to the victim, however, when the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) reported the matter to the police.
The convict was being tried on two counts of rape punishable under Section 367, and assault causing damage, under Section 364 of the Penal Code, Chapter 38, Volume Two, Statutes of the Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria, 2000.
In his judgment, the trial judge, Judge Bassey Nkanang, found Edet guilty of rape and therefore sentenced him.
“The defendant is hereby sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and this shall be calculated from October 10, 2019 inclusive, the date on which the defendant was arrested, until March 3, 2022 inclusive, the date on which the defendant was granted bail by this Court.
“Taking into account the aforementioned period, the calculation of the sentence will begin today until the entire term is completed. That is the judgment of this Court in this case,” the judge said.
