Buhari rewards Amusan, Brume, others with honors, N200m

President Muhammadu Buhari (Retired) on Thursday approved national accolades and cash prizes of N200 million for Nigeria team contingents who represented the country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and World Championships athletics.

At an awards ceremony held at the State House, Abuja, the President praised the athletes for their “outstanding performances” saying their sporting finest hour shone on the ‘world’s radar on Nigeria’ and their exploits projected the positive image of the country.

This was revealed in a statement signed by the President’s Special Advisor for Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled “President Buhari Awards Athletes of Commonwealth Games and World Championships in Athletics with National Honours, 200 million naira”.

They include gold medalists and other medalists including 100m hurdles world champion, Tobiloba Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Oborodudu, Oluwafemiayo Folashade, Taiwo Liadi, Ikechukwu Obichukwu, Bose Omolayo, Favor Ofili, Nasiru Sule, Ifechukwude Ikpeoyi, Ebikewenimo Welson, Hannah Reuben and Elizabeth Oshoba.

Speaking at a presidential reception honoring the athletes, the president said his government is committed to rewarding excellence, not least for those members of Team Nigeria who ignited the spirit of victory in the country thanks to outstanding performances in international competitions.

Describing the athletes as champions, worthy ambassadors, national heroes and heroines, Buhari said the awards “will push them to greater heights”.

He said: “I have watched with millions of Nigerians those thrilling moments when you all brought smiles to us and our homes by breaking world, national and game records as well as achieving personal bests in your career.

“Your outstanding performances of late are consistent with the determination of a nation that always aspires to great performances. All of you, members of the Nigeria team, have ignited the spirit of victory in our country, but more so , you have been victorious in major championships and sports games.

“I have closely followed your achievements at the World Championships in Oregon, USA, as well as your remarkable performance at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK. And I am very happy that you have shown great sporting talents on a personal and collective level and that you have given your country great performances on the podium.

The President noted that 12 times the world stopped when the flag of Nigeria was raised and the national anthem was recited. 35 times we have been on the podium.

“All of you, Team Nigeria, have made this possible. You have brought glory and honor to our country. And today, on behalf of the nation, I say THANK YOU!

Buhari also acknowledged the progress made in the sports sector under the leadership of Youth and Sports Development Minister, Sunday Dare and his team, hailing the many and sustained successes recorded over the past few years.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development has called 2022 an exceptional year in the history of Nigerian sport which will not be soon forgotten.

Dare said in athletics, Amusan won Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal at the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene, Oregon, USA in four months with a world-record performance in a heavily dominated event. by Americans and Europeans.

She also successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title, which she won in 2018 in Gold Coast, with a record games in 2022 in Birmingham; and the Diamond League title in Zurich, Switzerland on September 8, 2022, the Minister said, adding that this remarkable performance had never been achieved by any Nigerian in the history of our sports.

“Mr. President, through the sporting achievements and excellence of the young athletes before you in this hall and many others who were unable to make it to this reception, Nigeria has made it known that it will not relent not.

“That he will step up and compete for every available laurel not only in sport but in youth development, economic advancement, social empowerment, political development and many more,” he said .

He thanked the President, saying that “this administration’s investment in youth and sports development will continue to pay off years after you may have completed your term as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” .
