Trust Sonny Boy Sekowe (born November 15, 1987), professionally known for his stage name Loid Phori but popularly called DJ Maphorisa, is a South African record producer, DJ and singer. His well-known genres of house music are Pianos and afropop.

DJ Maphorisa has worked hard with well-known artists, including Assistant, Sizwe Alakine, kwesta, Uhuru, Duck, Black coffee, Major Lazer, RunvilleC4 Pedro, TRESOR, Kabza De Small and Era Istrefi, who collaborated with him and gave him production credits. After leaving Kalawa Jazmee Recordshe currently runs his own record company, BlaqBoy Music.

Youth and education

DJ Maphorisa was born on November 15, 1987 in Pretoria, South Africa, into a family of musicians. Her father was from Nigeria, while her mother was from South Africa. His mother was a gospel singer which helped his music career as he developed a deep passion for the genre while growing up and listening to gospel music.

He always attributed his musical success to coming from a musically inclined family and once claimed that his uncle, who gave him his first recording set, had been a significant influence on his musical career. . Since that time, he has been completely captivated by music. At a very young age, he began to experiment with music by listening to his mother’s recordings. Later, his passion for poetry encouraged him to start writing music.

DJ Maphorisa attended high school in his hometown, but like most musicians he was an average student and dropped out to focus on his career. He later made the decision to go back to school but kept his curriculum a secret. Since he has already started his studies, he can obtain his college diploma.


Young Maphorisa made a brave move at the age of 17 when he recorded and produced his first song, “Funny head.” He accomplished this while still in the eleventh grade. Shortly after, he was found by DJ Oskido of Kalawa Jazmee’s labelwho hired him as a producer, despite the fact that he was still a student.

At the same time, Maphorisa collaborates with DJ Oskido develop his sound. His take-home pay was insufficient to cover all his expenses, including transportation costs between Pretoria, where he lived, and Kalawa Jazmee, where he worked. He was working extra DJ crews and hosting talk shows on the weekends to make up for it and make a little more money.

His big breakthrough in the music industry came when he started working with top South African musicians on their rhythm creations and music productions. He first collaborated with renowned DJs like Buckz and Oskido of Kalawa Jazmee. He has also collaborated successfully with notable Nigerian musicians including Assistant, Runvilleand davido.

In 2008, with the singers Xelimpilo, DJ kickand PianoMaphorisa founded the group Uhuru in order to stand out and create a new sound. He entered the music world aggressively through this group, while he and his friends collaborated with the Kalawa Jazmee record company.

On November 17, 2017, shortly after her birthday, Maphorisa proceeded to release an entire album titled black boy Music through his record label, black boy music. He mixed many genres and incorporated several South African performers, like vanessa and Legacy.

Rumble in the Jungle“, a studio album on which Maphorisa collaborated with other musicians such as treasure and Kabza De Petitwas released on April 9, 2021.”Girls“, a studio PE by The police and Tyler’s Intensive Care Unitwas also released the same year on April 16. The South African Recording Industry awarded the single “Girlsa double platinum certification after receiving over 4.2 million streams. In 2021, he embarked on the Made in Lagos Tour as by Wizkid opening act. He is in the running for the best DJ in 2021 Kwaito Music and House Music Awards.

On September 17, 2021, he collaborated with Kabza De Smalground Friend Faku to release the single”let them sleep» and also produced «Errors” and “Star“, two hits of Congolese artist TREASUREtaken from the album in October 2021.
