The Benue State Community Volunteer Guards Task Force (BSCVG) has arrested two suspected criminals who specialize in stealing mobile phones and money from travellers.
The suspects were arrested with two locally made pistols at Yaman Park in the Wurukum area of Makurdi on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.
The suspects gave their names as Ugba Terese popularly known as (Big Sharp) of St Augustine Demekpe Church, Makurdi, and Orjime Ahamgba Kanyima behind Navy Barracks Kanshio, Makurdi.
When questioned, the two suspects admitted to snatching a phone from a traveler who came down from Kano on Monday night, as well as collecting twelve thousand naira (N12,000) from another traveler last week at gunpoint.
The suspects further recounted how they tricked travelers into their trap.
“I begged him to let me make a call with his phone and he agreed. Then my friend followed him with slaps. Out of fear he ran away leaving us with the phone,” said one of the suspects.
The two suspects confessed to being involved in the act for years, but asked forgiveness from their victims, the BSCVG, the police and the public, saying they would immediately desist if pardoned.
Parading the suspects at Makurdi Station of the BSCVG State Operational Office, the Patrol and Guard (P&G) Officer who is also the team leader, Officer Ime Nathan, as well as Officer Major General Staff (PSO) of Commander Adi Titus all reiterated their commitment to intensify these operations, pledging that no stone will be left to root out the criminals in the state.
Ime said they would hand over the suspects to police for further investigation and further prosecution after the parade, although efforts were still underway to attack other union members.
