Bandits kidnapped three farmers and killed another in Kurgin Gabas community in the western part of Birnin-Gwari local government area in Kaduna state.
Birnin Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU) President Ishaq Usman Kasai confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, September 18, 2022.
According to him, on Thursday, September 15, 2022, armed bandits abducted the three victims from their farms.
He said the bandits also stormed the same community on Friday, snatched a motorbike (Bajaj model) and killed the owner identified as Bala Balansi on the spot before returning to the forest.
Kasai also said bandits had since September 1 blocked the Birnin-Gwari-Funtua highway and confiscated more than 30 vehicles, including large trucks.
Mr Kasai also said that many travelers abducted on September 1 had not yet been released.
“Another disturbing scenario is that the bandits took away all the goods contained in the vehicle bombs and people were forced to pay huge sums of money ranging from 300,000 to 1 million naira to recover their vehicle bombs” , he lamented, adding that the bandits charged vehicle owners based on the size and nature of the vehicle.
“The BEPU is therefore appealing for the mobilization of troops to ensure the opening of the Birnin-Gwari-Funtua road and for the unconditional recovery of the trapped vehicles.” he added.
The President said that the BEPU is confident that the opening of the road and sustained monitoring will help solve the problem of attacks on travelers and bring about permanent peace as well as strengthen trade and other economic activities in the region. Birnin-Gwari LGA.
He said that the BEPU recognized that the level of security on the Birnin-Gwari highway in Kaduna had improved following the earlier visit of the GOC of 1 Div Kaduna and the subsequent mobilization of troops as well as the occasional aerial surveillance along the road by security agencies.
