2022 World Cup: “Sport should not be politicized”

World Cup 2022:

French President Emmanuel Macron has defended his decision to go to Qatar should France qualify for the World Cup semi-finals in a bid to defend their title.

Qatar won the hosting rights for this year’s World Cup in 2010. Due to extreme summer heat, the tournament was moved to the winter months for the first time. However, the country has come under scrutiny over how it achieved the rights, the condition of workers building the stadiums over the past 12 years, free speech issues and the alleged persecution of LGBTQ people.

Macron, said Thursday, November 17 that “sport should not be politicized”.

He added that questions about Qatar’s human rights record and the environment were “questions you need to ask yourself when awarding the event.”

On Monday, the Elysee Palace said Macron would travel to Qatar if the country’s national team made it to the semi-finals, saying the French president “wrote them a message” to that effect.

France’s title defense begins in the coming days. The team is in Group D with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia.
